"The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg. Dreams are the seedlings of realities." - James Allen
Achieving a goal has many layers, or aspects, to it. First, as James Allen suggests, a dream takes shape as your imagination becomes activated. Albert Einsten said that imagination is actually more important than knowledge, because it points to what you might yet discover and create. You also need clarity regarding what the goal is and you need to believe that you can achieve it. Another beneficial ingredient is flexibility. It's helpful to be open to different possibilities rather than becoming too attached to how you think your goal will be reached.
Imagination, clarity, belief, flexibility - these components lay the foundation. But you also need to take action. Don't worry about how big or small your action steps are. Any action in the direction of your dream, no matter how small, creates momentum. And don't worry about making mistakes as you move forward. This is what Jack Canfield says about taking action: "As you begin to take action, you must realize that not every action will be perfect. Not every action will produce the desired result, or even work. Making mistakes, getting it almost right, and experimenting to see what happens are all part of the process of eventually getting it right."
What is one thing you can do right now that will bring you closer to your goal? Go do it now and then celebrate that you took that first step - congratulations!
