When we learn how to celebrate others' success, we welcome more success into our own lives. In the same way, when we help each other, we help ourselves. We are all much more connected than we think and than we sometimes feel. This is a lovely little story that illustrates the benefits of helping one another.
A woman wanted to know what heaven and hell were like, so she asked an angel to explain it to her. First, the angel showed her a scene with a very large bowl of soup, so big that people were perched all along the edges of it. Everyone had a spoon with a very long handle that they were using to scoop spoonfuls of soup. But try as they might, the handles were too long and they couldn't bring the soup to their mouths to eat. Each was trying desperately to feed themselves, and all were starving. The angel said, "This is hell." Next, the woman is shown a scene very much like the first one: a very large bowl of soup with people perched all around, each with their long handled spoon to reach the soup. But here the people are smiling, happy, and healthy. The woman then notices that the people here are using the spoons to scoop spoonfuls of soup...and they are feeding each other. They are helping each other eat. The angel said, "And THIS...is Heaven."
