There is a quote by W.L. Bateman: “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got.” This is also true in the case of the words you use and the stories you tell yourself and others. If you keep justifying why you are bad at something or unable to get things exactly the way you want them you will keep on fulfilling the very words you prophesize. Whatever “story” you make up, you will live into it. It is time to realize that you are the author of your life story. And you can rewrite your story at any time.
Write down a story that you can recall frequently telling about yourself. Think about how this story might be preventing you from growing past the limitation. How would you like the result to be different? What would need to change for this to happen?
A belief is just a thought we tell ourselves over and over again until we accept it as the truth. Then why can’t we tell ourselves (and others) a new story in which we overcome the obstacle? Instead of: “I am so bad with money. I can never seem to get ahead financially. My parents were terrible with money and I got it from them.” Your improved story might look something like this: “I have had to learn healthier habits when it comes to managing my money and now I make better choices. I am careful with my spending and I feel a sense of satisfaction when I save money. The lessons I’ve learned have paid off.” Commit to telling this new story when the opportunity arises and watch how your beliefs about yourself will change over time. Once you align your beliefs with what you desire there is little standing in the way of your success.
